Charcoal Canister
« on: February 28, 2012, 09:00:54 AM »
Cole's 71 had a Reservoir and a charcoal canister for venting the gas tank.  The reservior was located right behind the driver seat and had three plastic tubes. One from the gas tank where vapors would solidify, one that would take the gas back to the tank and one to the charcoal cannister. The cannister was apparently located front passenger side.

This system was/is not intact and you are left with gas fumes. All that is left is the tubing and lines. Any suggestions on what to do?

So I guess you have none of the canisters? You will need them, mine are missing also and the fumes are bad. I was thinking of looking at the junk yard for something off of a modern Ford truck. I'll let you know what I end up using.

My 77 is different because there is no space inside for the tank. Not sure what mine is supposed to look like? Maybe Parkers still has it?

The tank behind the driver's seat is an evaporation canister.  It is designed to condense the vapors and drain back into the tank.  The charcoal canister is a different system.  It is designed to neutralize the vapors rather than condense them.  pre-77 had an evap behind the drivers seat and a charcoal beneath the passenger floor pan near the firewall.  77's do not have an evap, only a charcoal canister, located between the firewall and wheel well on the passenger side.

I've seen the canister on the front passenger side but mine didn't have it when I got it. I probably need something off a newer truck that would work.

check CB.com.  I think explorers are a good donor.  I believe they are hooked into the air intake on a carb, or the purge solenoid on EFI.

I wonder how much fuel actually made it back to the tank from the evaporation canister.  I thought about the plastic tank but the original was in to good of shape.  G sounds or smells like you have the same problem. Let me know if you find a solution.
