CB/Ham Radios
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:10:27 PM »
It would probably be a good idea to encourage everyone to install a CB and/or get a Ham license and equipment.  One of the biggest issues I have seen on trail rides is a lack of communication between leader/followers.  I've got a cheap Uniden CB with a Wilson Silverflex antenna.  I'm toying with the idea of getting into Ham as well.

I used to be big into CBs back in the day. I have been thinking about getting CB setup in the 77. Maybe just something cheap. What's the current deal on licensing for a CB?

no license for a CB.  Law states 4 watt max, it is largely ignored and you can easily find 12+ watt CBs.  Really depends on what you want to do with it.

You'll need a Ham for that...With Ham, you can hit repeaters and communicate for 10's and 100's of miles.  CB is limited, realistically, to about 10 miles.  Ham starts at 10 miles and goes up depending on conditions and equipment.

Course, all of this only works if the person you want to talk to is listening...got your ears on?

Not entirely true. Had an RCI2950, Modulated, driving a 500 Texas star and I could talk to Nova Scotia pretty regular from St. Cloud  8)

When I get stuck, someone better be closer than 10 miles.
