Gears
« on: April 28, 2016, 03:30:40 PM »
Anyone have some free time to help me setup the gears in my front/rear axles?  I'll have everything already torn down, just need some experience on the setup.

I never have any time on the weekend but maybe after work one day next week. What time do you get home?

I got the diff put in last night.  Pre-load is 20-30 with as much torque as I could muster on the pinion nut, which is still less than 200lbs.  Backlash is .07, and the pattern looks shallow on the drive side, deep on the coast side, and perfect where the paint rubbed off on other teeth.

Pattern looks like the bottom left of the acceptable patterns picture.

I get home around 6.

Good work man, i bet that pattern wil be fine.

I have so much to do to our camper in the next two weeks to get ready for our vacation that i don't know if I'll have any time to help with the other diff but if you get in a real jam let me know.

I thought I had an open 9" carrier, turned out to be a trac-loc.  Anyone have an open carrier sitting on the shelf?

Got the front diff installed.  Not a pro job, but i'm betting on it holding together.  Either going to regear my trac-loc or hopefully find an open carrier so I can go ahead and do the spartan.

If you're going to use it mostly off road hold out and put in the Spartin. If it will be mostly street the trac-loc will be much better. An automatic locker can be quirky on the street. I have mostly gotten used to my Grizzly but it can be a pain sometimes on the street.

good news is if I don't like the spartan, or if I blow it up, I'm not out much.  If I go LSD, it will be true-trac

I never bothered to count the teeth on my 9" 4.11 gear, since 410 is clearly stamped on the ring.  After chasing a binding issue, discovering that the rear tires completed a rotation faster than the front, and finally counting the teeth, my rear gear turned out to be 3.50.  So, now I have a 4.11 richmond set on order.
