This topic gets a lot of traffic over on CB.COM so I figured I'd make one here. ;)

Gotta fix the Laser First (new power head baby), then put the fuel pump in the Unimog. I will be pulling the 73 over to the barn this weekend regardless. 8)

Oh, I did drive mine yesterday.  Picked up new fluids and filters.  The I realized I could have the oil changed at Napleton or Kraft for $10, cheaper and faster than I could do it myself, so the fluid and filters are going back.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on February 16, 2012, 10:34:42 AM
How do they do it that cheap? I bought a gallon of cheap oil yesterday and it was over $20. >:(
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: lonesouth on February 16, 2012, 10:40:50 AM
they take a loss on it, but try to upsell on wipers, tires and other consumables.

http://www.kraftnissan.com/OilChangeSpecial.aspx

excludes diesels.  Call before and ENSURE they have a filter on hand.  One day I took both cars in, and after telling me they had a filter for both, they had neither.  So make sure they have your filter.

Also, last time Adrienne took the 4runner in, it took 2 hours.

Napleton is running $10 changes also, but synthetic runs $69.  Again, call before you go.

nissan will only do non domestic vehicles for that price

That's what I thought. I would rather pay extra and not take mine to a jap car place anyway.

nissan will only do non domestic vehicles for that price

I thought so as well, but just called and and was told they do foreign and domestic.

And Gary, if you think about it, by taking your car their just for the oil change, you are costing them money, not making them money.

That may be true but unfortunately both of those dealerships are x customers of mine. They both left us in the middle of a signed contracted term, owing us money. They are both owned by shady people.

I worked on my Motorcraft 2100 a little more this weekend. I almost have all the kinks worked out. It's not hesitating anymore, the choke is adjusted better so it's easy to start when cold (although the fast idle is sticking a little) and it seems like the hard start after hot issue is a little better. More updates later this week.

Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on February 29, 2012, 09:29:30 AM
Good, it seems like my vibration over 60 mph is gone. I guess the wheel wasn't bent, the tire must have just been out of balance.

They are real quiet right now (much quieter than the Coopers) but I'm sure they will get louder when they wear some.

I installed a neutral safety switch and hooked up my backup lights. I also left the dash mounted switch for the backup lights installed so I can switch them on with the truck off if I need to.

I also noticed that my transfer case isn't leaking anymore after our last trail ride. I bet it didn't fix itself, it's probably out of oil.  :(

Little late so I will do it this way.
Sat. Drove it 160 miles from my house to Mom's towing the boat, Old school too, Boat is an older v bottom with a 66 9.8 Mercury!

Sunday. Drove to Perry, and driving it to work,

Yea not work to the Bronco but have identified some things that need attention at the end of the month
Rear driveshaft, Slip joint is shot.
Steering, getting a little sloppy.
Top. The top lost both rear straps. It has lasted almost 2 years and being a NOS one I am OK with it.

I didn't really measure it but it's thicker than I expected. It's also very dense so it helps a lot with sound control.

I Wired up a switch on electric fan (used an old headlight switch bezel to make the switch match the others on dash).
Installed fender Flares on drivers side and started passenger side.
Installed a radio Antenae.
Installed new wiper switch.
Tonight I will start on installing new drive shaft, new ubolts, and finish the passenger side flares. Then its time to replace front axle seals and ball joints

Sounds like you made good progress. If you want to do the ball joints soon you should spray them down with some blaster so it can soak in.

I fixed my window crank. I also used the Bronco to pull the mustang out from under the car port. It had a burn fuseable link so it wouldn't start.

Replaced alternator with new Chrome GM one wire alernator. Had to drill out hole to allow for larger bolt. had to relocate ground to keep in from contacting post on alt. Washed tons of mud out of everything. installed two more speakers, rewrapped header on passenger side. took side windows and rear window out to allow rain to more easily enter the vehicle (just kidding just bad timing on that one).

1/4 on the lip, 1/2 in the middle.  it is reinforced(a la bulletproof) glass.  lexan would probably work for what we do.

ordered a JB Fab twin stick.  Might be able to get it aligned tomorrow.

You will love the JB fab shifter, they are very well made and work much better than the stock J-shifter.

There isn't much that an alignment shop can do on an EB. The only adjustment they can do is Toe-in so don't let them charge you much. Also the factory specs are crap for a lifted EB with larger tires so they probably won't adjust the Toe correctly anyway.

Taking it to big ten.  Mike has been an offloader for a long time and I trust his judgement with this.

I've been an off roader for a long time also and an alignment shop won't be able to do anything but toe-in. If they know modified EBs they may know not to use the stock specs if you're lucky. the only way to change any other alignment settings is to install adjustable ball joint shims or cut and rotate the knuckles. you don't want to pay them for that, do it your self. the only good thing about taking it to a shop would be if they can give you a printout so you know if you have a problem.

if you do get a printout let me see it and I'll tell you if you need to change anything. I know what it takes to make these things drive good.

I started gutting and fixing some else's poor rust repair. I replace driver side vent window with one of my spares,(the latch was missing and a screw that was screwed into the rubber was the only thing keeping it closed . I added diamond plate rocker covers.

All of the fiberglass used on the inside to fix rust has been removed. now its time to break out the welder and scrap metal .

I removed all the tires and have it on Jack stands to start rebuilding the Brakes and checking bearings and seals.

I will post pictures of the progress soon.

I actually did something today though I'll admit it wasn't much.
I have a friend in Atlanta that researches and does big dollar restos.
Were talking down to the crayon marks during assembly kind of stuff.
We spoke about what to do with an uncut 66 U-13 roadster that is now safely in out of the rain and sleeping happily in it's new stall over here. Next step is taking pictures. As soon as someone coughs up a title I may be able to get started on a couple of significant things.

well, the shocks still required some work to get them to fit.  The top bushing had to be removed as it was too small to fit on the shock mount.  The results were looser than I expected, but I don't see it being a problem.  The bottom bushing had to be ground down to fit inside the lower shock mount.  Took about 30 minutes of work to install both sides, but the jump up and down on the bumper test shows that they will work.

New master cyl and booster didn't work out so well. It was like manual brakes. The new booster is just to small. I ended up putting my old stuff back on.

It rides so much nicer with shocks at all four corners.

On another note, I left my keys in a buddy's car last night, so I had to drive the bronco to work.  Still needs some tuning, not enough advance and the engine stutters once it warms up, but couldn't ask for better weather :)

List of things to do:
1. replace steering linkage with stone crusher
  - this will both tighten up my steering and recenter my steering wheel
2. replace 32x11.50r15 and FSB wheels with 16" wheels and 33x12.50r16
  - will allow running without spacers and allow the tires to be balanced better
3. replace rear bearing that ticks
4. EFI
5. brake check all around
6. replace front seats

Yes the Red one is my Trail Truck. I will be pulling motor, trans, and transfer case out of the 74 "primer one" and build a new 302 to re-install. I also received my twin sticks for the trail truck.

I have a wagon top for both not sure which is in better shape yet. I will post some pictures up of both projects

removed all carpet and insulation. rear seat. cleaning and painting seat brackets. removed center console, found mount holes in floor were wallowed out from over tightening. fixed that by hammering flat and then wire brushed to clean metal and primed/painted. pressure washer console in and out to get PO's crud and old coffee off. looks like new. cleaned and coated each bolt with silicone before bolting back down. just small stuff but fun.

By the way, Discount Tires Sucks, Other than taking two days to mount 4 tires, not balancing them correctly even after I showed them the instructions from the wheel manufacturer, and scratching my new wheels up they finally got them done. >:(

look great, did you get the National Wheel $99 deal on those? sucks about Discount. which one was it? I have used the Kilearn one for several sets of high end tires and no issues and they always cut me a deal based on how much I spend there over the years.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on December 11, 2013, 07:55:14 PM
No, I did not get a deal at all. Discount also charged me way to much and did a terrible job. It was the one on kilearn center blvd. They got one major dent with scratches trailing it on one wheel and just minor scratches on the others. Not sure if they are balanced yet but they did not do it the way M/T explained to on the large warning page in each box, even though I showed it to them.

I have decided that 5 1/2 lift I too much and as good a deal as that is I am going to pass.

I will talk to another friend this weekend to see if he is interested in buying it. I would still like to see about trading wheels and tires if you are interested.

Rebuilt my front axle (again) last night to replace the inner seals. I was going to install my new T-Bird calipers but they require a larger banjo bolt and no one has them in stock. Oh well, I guess I'll wait until after Christmas.

I did get my rear brakes replaced today. Also change out a bad emergency brake cable.

Finally installed my T Bird calipers. Had to modify my brake hoses to make them fit and was able stop them from leaking by installing two copper washers instead of one. I guess it will hold. I'll keep an eye on them but may end up getting some custom stainless hoses eventually.

I haven't driven it yet to see how they work but I'll let you know soon.

My new front calipers seem to be working well. The extra stopping power is noticeable. It takes very little pressure on the brakes to stop. I need to do some "panic" stops to see how if behaves and make sure my front hoses don't leak but other than that I think they're good to go.

May as well, the weather won't be good for anything else.

I may fix some more rust on mine. Ever notice that POR15 seems to work really well when it's damp out? I think the moisture activates it somehow.

Lonesouth, I'll be back in Tallahassee on Monday. I working on the bridges over little river on sr90 towards Quincy. I can meet you about any time either early or late. Let me know. I have some work to do on the passenger side floor so I'll try it there. Been watching videos on the stuff and my only concern is having to move my bronco outside my shop to wash it out with the hose. I'm thinking maybe just prep as I normally would then treat with rust buster then por15. Sounds like an awesome product. (229)3937370
I'll try and post some pictures so I can track my progress.

Welding sheet metal is a little tricky but it can be done with a little practice. Maybe try on a piece of scrap metal first. That will help you get your machine setup correctly and practice never hurts.

Cut out and replaced a small strip across the old hood this afternoon. Had to turn the welder almost all the way down. (Miller 211) Went better than I expected but I'm gonna have to get better at bending the sheet metal to match. Should be much easier on a flat panel. I also might invest in a recess tool so I can overlap the panels rather than cut to fit. I'm gonna try to post some pics.

removed the degreed blocks from the rear and replaced with straight aluminum blocks.
removed the rear tires and spacers in anticipation of the new wheels/tires

Took a square to the pan, bent outa shape in every way.  Pounded it to 1/16 or less gap all the way around and used rtv to seal it.  Hopefully that will work.  ATF is harder to get out of hair than 80wt.

restabbed the distributor one tooth advanced so I could get better adjustment.  Before I could only dial in 5* till I hit the t-stat housing.  Now I can go down to 0 and up to 20.  Set the timing at 11 and the idle is MUCH more smooth.  May reset the idle mixture screws and choke today.

I had to disassemble my winch to clean out the gear box. I had noticed that it was getting hard to disengage so I figured I'd pull it apart and I'm glad I did. I guess muddin in water up to my headlights was a  bad idea because it was full of water/rust. I got it cleaned up and greased it with some good waterproof grease so I think it will be fine now. The motor side was perfectly clean just the planetary side was bad. I got it installed last night and pulled all the cable out to straighten it up and it pulled back in fine.

I posted this same issue and repair on FJ site months back. I had to order the damn Warn gasket (so I ordered 2). There was special spec grease, not sure it was waterproof but works great now. Every time I wash the FJ I swing the lever to be sure it moves easily.

Good work!

Anyone got a Dana 44 laying around needing a Bronco? Since my motor is basically stock and I do not intend on serious 'bogging' or 'rock climbing' should I convert over or just beef up my Dana 30? Locker, axles? I do want to upgrade to disc up front in future...

If you can find a D44 from a fullsize Bronco or F150 with disc brakes maybe you can use the parts and my old housing and build one. You would have to get the long side inner axle cut down and re-splined of just buy a EB length inner shaft.

Bought the Harbor Freight Stud welder to use especially on my tailgate.  I will post a pic of what I have done so far...needless to say, the metal is REAL metal and not coke can thickness.  Note: there are two diff thicknesses of studs; I am using the smaller ones presently and I am 'breaking off' the studs after multiple strikes to move the metal.  It is moving it but very stubbornly though.  I will use the larger stud next to see how they work.  Any one got any pointers that have used these on approx. 18 -20 gauge metal?

I have worked a little more with the stud welder.  It is working and seems to be OK for a workshop...if you are going to buy one to use regularly, you will need to spend another $150 bucks (on top of the $120 of Harbor Freight) to get one to meet that demand.  No problems so far; it is strong enough to weld the studs and not burn through on 'real' metal.  I would be curious to see how it would work on panels on vehicles today.  Forgot again to take some pics of what I am doing...and was too stupid to not take a beginning pic either.  I still have at least an hours more worth of work to try to pull more out.  once I post a pic you will see how it is even more challenging given the location of the 'dent' on the edges of bends, edges, etc..

The trans fluid is much darker than new, may be burned, I've never witnessed burned trans fluid, so I can't say for sure.  There is a dark particulate film covering everything.  Looks like old motor oil.

Just an FYI. I was buying a few parts online and ran across bronco hut.com, don't know if any of you have seen it but they are a complete restoration garage out of Denver i think. Have 70 broncos for sale on their lot. They Make a ton of aftermarket trim parts among other things and I found a few things that i would have to pay big money for if I had them custom made. Toms or bronco graveyard didn't have what i wanted or anything close to that. Their  website is a little lacking but getting redone but i sent a pretty inquisitive email and had a return call within fifteen minutes. I get the products Wed and I will tell you what i think about the quality.  8)

Well...the body is sitting level now and my doors look like they will now line up properly! The redneck body lift kit is now gone (amounted to 2 wooden blocks 2x4x3, tire side wall cut out in a circle - rounded with a hole in center (4 of them) and one 3 inch metal channel for the rear body lift, bits and pieces of a 2 inch body lift kit and lots of creative welding holding up the center two body mounts - and let's not forget some 3/8s inch threaded rod with Nuts welded on top to make 7 inch bolts and holding up the front the body mount on the DS core support was blow torched off a piece of 5 inch angle iron. - I saved all of this, in case any of you need it)  I will post some shots of all this crap............  Granted I am redneck and can get creative but come on the IQ to do this probably hovered around 27? ... I have about 4 hours of time to dismantle it all, while also repairing the creative welding and body mounts.

This weekend I put my seats back a few inches and wow what a difference. I am not a tall guy but i do have long legs. I think the prior owner was part hobbit. Once I did that I did notice that they were very low to the floor so I added a 3/4" spacer  to the front bolts which makes them sit a little higher/better. I have a few holes that aren't used now. Should I put something in those to seal the floor off from moisture? If so what would you recommend or just leave it alone?

A few inches of carpet in the front was pretty mangled from earlier installs. Any suggestions as to what I can cover it with for better esthetics?

I also put in a Tuffy storage box in the rear.

This week I am getting some Nerf bars put on. Almost anything that fits on a Jeep will fit on a bronco so i am looking forward to seeing how these look as the ones online for the older style broncos aren't that flattering.

Does anyone have an alarm on their broncos? Its not like it is hard to break into these things with minimal effort. Mine has a soft top so I was just curious.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: BroncoBlair on April 15, 2014, 09:15:17 AM
I usually just put Bolts and nuts back in un-used holes to seal them up. Not sure what to do about carpet. Car Alarms are pretty easy to install but I have found that if someone wants something that doesn't stop them, just annoys people when they go off on accident. haha.

Cant wait to see it. sounds like a great bronco

Hey Thanks, you were in my hood.

I can't take credit for everything as I sort of cheated and bought it frame off restored from the head mechanic of a Ford dealership that was hurting for cash. I am tinkering however. This is a bit of an addiction..... Seems like every time I go to fix or replace something it isn't where it usually is. Got new exterior LED lights and some roll cage pads on the way. Then I swear I am through. Except if I replace the tires........ ;D

I probably need someone to take a look at my transmission. Seeing how i can't do that myself is there any mechanic or company out there that someone recommends?

Hey Bart,
I have a great transmission guy who can look at it for you . He is a close friend and we used to work together years ago. Nationwide Transmissions is the business and Mike Helton is the Trans God. ;D I can give him a call and let him know you are going to stop by so he can take a look, just let me know when is good for you.

By the way, you are fooling yourself if you think you will ever be "Done" with your Bronco. It is an addiction. ;)

Today got my windows tinted in the front and man that makes a huge difference in the esthetics. Dropping it at Nationwide on monday so they can check my transmission. I don't have any  issues but that is about the only thing that is stock on this rig.

So, on to my next question. I have an older wild horses 4x4 pre runner style front bumper that isn't made for a winch but you can install one if you want to drill into the bumper. I was considering putting on a winch. I was told that it is only held on by two bolts and that if I actually used the winch it would more than likely harm my frame due to lack of strength. I assume that they all mount in the same fashion, the bumper that is. Did anyone reinforce their bumpers or are bumpers designed for winches mounted differently or modified?  I doubt I will ever be inclined to do any heavy bogging and or rock climbing but for some odd reason i really want a winch. Comments?
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on April 25, 2014, 07:45:16 PM
I would have to look at it first before I can make any recommendation on reinforcement. I built my bumper specifically for a winch so it's going to be different than yours. Mine has channel iron that goes into the frame rail about 6 inches to reinforce it.

Parker has a pre runner type bumper with a winch and it seems very secure. We should be able to compare it to his.

I put a grade 8 bolt cross ways through the frame in addition to the factory bolts.  If it rips out, i'll rebuild and make it bullet proof.

Gotta reschedule to another day for the transmission removal.  I was laid up Friday through Sunday with a fever and we are supposed to go look at possible new to us Sequoia for Adrienne at 6 Wednesday.

Let me know what days work for y'all, and I can work around that.

I can probably do Thursday after work.

Any other Bronco Brothers should come by and lend a hand and talk Broncos.

Driveshafts removed
Torque converter drained and nuts removed
Transfer case drained
Cooling lines disconnected
Starter removed
Workbench cleaned up
Most tools put away
Fridge chock full of coke and water, maybe 9 beers

Was not able to unbolt exhaust from manifolds.  If we need to cut it, I want a new system anyway.

Mike said he was going to pull the tranny apart last night before he left the shop. He was kinda baffled by why it failed the way it did. He wondered why it had silicon on the pan? Also the stuff in the bottom of the pan is clutch.

Can you document exactly what happened when it failed and what the symptoms where?l I couldn't remember exactly.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: lonesouth on May 03, 2014, 09:24:44 PM
Silicon on the pan is because I couldn't stop the leaks from the gasket.  I finally pounded the pan as flat as I could, 1/16" warp point to point anywhere and then I put silicon on both sides of the gasket to ensure the leak was taken care of.  Probably would have been fine after straightening the pan without the silicon.

Today I was doing a long sandy hill climb in 1st gear 4wd hi, when I was nearly at the top, the truck suddenly stopped going forward. Initial thought was the shift linkage, which we worked on and were able to get D-2-1 working again. However, there were no positions that gave park, reverse or neutral. All of these gears put a load on the engine, but didn't give any forward movement. When it first stopped, I tried shifting around to re-engage 1 and heard a a grinding noise like if you tried to shift the t-case at high RPM. Not a clunking, more of a whirring.

Magically, after sitting for two weeks, I have all the gears again, including engine braking in 1st. However, there is a whirring and slipping when going into D, and reverse loads then engine more than it should.

That's the last time I had it running before we pulled it.

I put in the Wild Horses Deluxe exterior LED lights this weekend. All of them look pretty good. A big difference. But, of course the brake lights (the most expensive parts)  don't fit my brake light housing. So i had to order a few parts to try to make them fit. I know they can be modified to fit but in a side note the flasher they supplied didn't really work. So, i have the older brake lights and older flasher in and everything else LED. Gary, did this happen to you too? Could i leave in old flasher and use a resistor of some sort? Just curious. I have no idea how this thing is wired.

I went ahead and purchased the billet aluminum front and rear light trim kits. I will post it when it is done.

I am still perplexed on why these LED brake lights do not work while all the others do. I can get some to work when the head lights aren't on but not when they are on. The brake lights  and turn lights do not work. I know there are other flashers in the vehicle. Maybe swapping those all out? Any suggestions? Now it is a matter of pride and I want to figure something out. Hmmmmmmmm

Post by: Climax on May 13, 2014, 06:21:06 PM
Thanks for the tire info.  Where would I find 32 9.5 15s?

Light problem.  First question is have you tested the new LED lights out of the vehicle and if so do they work.  Most lights have a 3wire plug and the center is the ground.  So hook the center to a the ground post on the battery and touch a short piece of wire from the positive side to one side than the other but not at the same time.  Caution do not let the pos side touch the neg side.  It could get exciting.  One side should be brighter than the other.
Do this than post he results.

$500 later, I've got a rebuilt C4 and new torque converter.  Hoping to install next week or the week after.  I need to finish the fuel line replacement before I move on to the transmission.  Just waiting on a 3.8-16 tap I ordered to come in.

Gary, Mike said to talk to him before we put it back in.  Something to do with alignment and dowels...

Let me know when you start putting everything back in. I want more familiarity with the mechanical side of it.

I did install all of the billet light housings. They match up quite well for my bronco. Make it look a little more current and matches paint fairly well.

In regards to the LED lights. the front and both side LEDs work great. The only problem I have is with the brake light LEDs. I have installed a new flasher and even tried "resistors" and it all works the same. When the headlamps aren't on everything works as it should. When I turn head lights on the brake lights just stay constantly lit and do not blink when blinker is on to either side and if regular lamp is in it works as it should and blinks.

There is another flasher right next to the one I have replaced. Anyone know what that one is for? Maybe i replace that too and see what happens?

I will try that when i get home. I did purchase another flasher just  to try. I am not even sure if I have emergency flash capability anyway. How do you turn yours on? Is it through the headlight switch? If it is another button i don't have that installed on mine.

I installed another flasher at lunch and tried both style LED lights and none work while headlights are on. I guess I am stuck on that one.

I also checked for any emergency light switch and i have none on the dash. I will check the steering column when I get home.

Between the yard work and unexpected things...the fire Bronfire was not built.  It will be this week or weekend.
I did work on my tail gate and wagon top.  Will put some filler on the stitch welds on the tail gate and also wire wheel the drip rail on the wagon top.  I dug all the old putty out of the drip rail..what a job! Good news is the rail is in great shape and no metal work is apparent.  I do have one patch job to do on the top corner where they backed in to a sharp metal object and pierced the roof.  will also weld up the cracks on the back corner - must be stress cracks??? will try to get that done during the week.

You're getting close now. I wish I had time to come help this weekend but I'm tied up. Blair has gone out of town Camping/mud bogging and won't be back until Sunday. If you don't get it finished up this weekend maybe we can come by early next week and help?

I'll post up as if get more progress.  Hopefully I can get it running while the kids are napping.  Only took about an hour to bolt up the transmission and two hours for the t-case/x-member.  I'm really starting to get worried, because this stuff should be taking much longer and causing more grief, so clearly I must be missing something.

It does get faster the more you do it.
Yes mine is uncut.  How big can I squeeze under the fender with a 2.5-3.5 lift?  I don't think I want to go any higher at my age.

Just a question.
Where is the best place to get fenders and are the fiberglass ones worth a crap?
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on July 11, 2014, 06:56:46 PM
I hear ya, 2.5" lift on mine is plenty tall. ;)

31-10.50- 15s on stock wheel will fit fine. With a little work you can fit 33-10.50-15s but it's tight.

The steel fenders are way better than glass.

Swap a good running low mileage 289 and man Trans with a  fuel injected motor with an auto.
Any thoughts anyone.
My goal is to build a daily driver with a camper insert for a retirement trip in 10 years or so.
Need reliable and gas mileage  with just enough power to move the rig.  Not looking for a race truck.

Keep i mind that the 11.50s really won't fit without cutting the rear fenders.

The EFI will give you a little more gas mileage and be reliable for a daily driver. The auto will be much easier on the truk and make driving with the extra load of a camper much easier.

I'm really interested in your camper plans, be sure to share when you get to that point. I'm a camper also and have some plans of my own.

I am a simple guy.  I like the less is more.  In 2010 I did a 26k mile trip around america and canida on a motorcycle.  I learned that you can live on almost nothing if you have a safe place to put your head, food in the belly, and a few dollars in the pocket.  By the way I did 26k miles in 96 days.  Visited most of the national parks.  All 4 corners of the us and the alkan hwy.  Also went to Prudhoe bay and homer ak.  Yes I got hot, cold and wet but I wouldnt traid it for anything.  Recommend it to every young man.  So the camper will just be a insulated shell to sleep and carry a few extra things.  Light and simple.  No built in bathroom or cooking anything.  On the trip I was able to get to (way ou there) places.  Park where the big rigs cant.   Well, too much info.

Man I got long on that. Sorry.
Iv been looming at some campers and they are all to fancy for me.  I think I want one to put in and out taking advantage of the removable top.  Will make it out of aluminum.  And very basic.  Also thinking about a v6 with auto.

They used to make a slide in designed just for the Bronco but they are rare. If you can't find one maybe you could build one with the same design. I can't wait till you get started on it, I'm very interested in what you come up with.

It will be a while before I get into the camper,  its been sitting for 5years and was used as a farm truck for most of its life.  I got it running good finely.  Going to look at the tires tonight that parker sent me the link to.  Thanks parker I think.  Hope to finish the rime within the next two weeks and have it back in the road.

Another subject.
Has anyone built a air bod for under the dash from aluminum for a/c?  I want to put it in at some point but I want the air vents in the dash not hanging under like the last one I had was.

I used an aftermarket kit from BC Broncos. If I had it to do again I would go directly to Vintage Air and get their Gen 4 system for the Bronco, it has much better air flow than the one BC Broncos has.

Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: BTIMMONS on July 22, 2014, 02:50:13 PM
Sure! let me know - I can retrofit those to my bestop seats...need one more seat.
The bestop seat I have is a 'tan' Aquasport seat that is neoprene and is not made by bestop anymore; guess I will buy a vinyl spice seat like my Jeep and then put seat covers on them until I figure out what I am going to do.
Is your Bronco II seat sliders fairly 'flat' or low?

I like the way the speaker pod turned out. It's just a simple three piece panel. I made it in three pieces so it would be easy to take out of the way if I need to work under the dash. It's 1/4 ply wood covered with black vinyl. It took me about 20 minutes to make it and install.

Busy wkend...
Pulled main caps off and plastigaged.  Noticed a split opinion when research plastigage use on forums... some think it is good, some think it is a waste as it fluctuates (not sure is see this unless there is a wrong way to use it).  I think it is useful in showing the eveness of the journal and how it applies to the rod, main bearing.
Note Rod cap in pic - will replace this one (motor has maybe 45 mins on it??).  It plastigaged with in specs but if you notice the round dark spot is what looks like 'trash' as it is raised up and you can fell it with your nail; also note the copper/brass color in the corner by the bearing groove - may not be visible in the rod pics...since there are marks on the opposing corner of this same cap - I am going to say this bearing got twisted or slightly tweaked when it was installed first.  For 6 bucks I think I will replace #4 rod bearing.  I only pulled three rods caps (all I could get to) but I think I may pull the remaining 5 tonight just to be sure and look at the wear patterns while I have the pan off.
Bought a new Melling HV oil pump while I was at it so hopefully my oil pressure will be good.

If you haven't installed the rear main cap yet be sure to put a little rtv on the joint between the two halves of the seal.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: BTIMMONS on August 05, 2014, 04:22:59 PM
yep, did that and offset the seal about 3/8s inch as specified.  put all mains back on last night - have not rotated the assembly yet.  will put new rod bearing in #4 and rotate to look at other rod caps and bearings.
The seal went in fairly easy as it has 45 minutes ... maybe? on it.  I WILL MAKE SURE TO USE RTV ON THE FLEX PLATE BOLTS AS THE THREADED HOLES GO STRAIGHT THROUGH TO THE INSIDE OF THE CRANKCASE.  Still got to get the trans from Mike tonight - clutches were locked with surface rust so he cleaned and freshened it back up at NC - really was my fault it sat for a while.  I will do my BEST to not let it sit that long this time...esp since the bronco is still on my trailer in my drive way!!!

Parker I hope to have the trans back in tonight or tomorrow...
Replaced rear main seal, plastigaged mains and rods, replaced rod bearings 3 and 4, put in a Melling HV oil pump...and Mike cleaned up the trans from sitting...

Moral of story: Don't let a freshly built motor and rebuilt trans to be stored for 3 years with out some kind of fluids in them....   Let's hope I am rewarded for all this hard work with the engine running normal and the transmission at least giving me park, forward and reverse!

Yeah, you need to see it, for the money it does everything very well. Hands free calling, blue tooth for pandora, amazon music, etc, blue tooth smart phone app that controls everything on the radio from your phone, remote, multi colored led display, reads text messages from phone, gets contacts from phone for voice dialing, all kinds of other crap and only $129. I also added some nice 6x9 sony 3way speakers and 5 1/4 sony 3way speaker and it sounds awesome, better than my $4500 Sony system in the Raptor, minus the bass from the sub.

Yes.  I got it in late Friday.  Got the Bronco off the trailer and now sitting in the drive way under a tarp..  it does have a park, reverse, and D, 2, 1...imagine that!
My Oil pressure is slightly over 20 lbs now due to the Melling HV...strong at 20 even when hot.  Did not have time to place the mechanical on it but will do so; not worried about it - after I did the whole plastigage and replaced #3/4 rod bearings I feel comfortable for now.  No oil leaks noticed either.
Now on to the body work and welding...may do some welding this week and finish that off so I can start back on body alignment and priming.
Sorry about the delay, Parker! I will get Gary's back to him this week.

got the trans fully installed, except for the shifter and NSS.  Exhaust bolted up, still to do hangers.  mini-starter installed.  Fired it up, didn't even touch the throttle and it spun to life, idling like I'd been driving it every day.  Only ran it for about 5 seconds, then I shut it down.

Still need to add fluids to the trans/t-case, hook up the NSS, and install the driveshafts.

Cool, Which kit is it? I see the 4.5 Super flex system on their site.  how much you want for it and what all does it need other than the u bolts? This kit shows shocks with it; are these with the one you have?
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?

It is a 5.5, I misspoke earlier.  It has never been installed.

http://shop.broncograveyard.com/55-Ultra-Deluxe-Kit-1976-77/productinfo/13935/

missing from this kit:
drop trac-bar bracket
u-bolts, I have 4, but I'm not sure they are the correct length.
I'm not certain that all of the bushings are accounted for. I have the majority, and the c-bushings, but have not checked to see what is there or not.

I have verified that I have the rest of it.
front coils
rear leafs
drop pitman
adjustable trac-bar
front/rear extended brake lines
radius arm drop brackets
blocks with built in angle adjustment, I ran these for about 2 months, so they aren't shiny any more
c-bushings
radius arm end bushings

so it looks like the only thing I KNOW you will need to buy is the trac-bar drop bracket, $58.

popped the top yesterday.  I don't think I'll ever use a hard top again, unless it is pristine.  Too much work, effort and risk in removal/install, I'd sooner pay the $600 for a Rampage.

is it the lifting it off? just fabricate a winch over head to lift off and store...one man operation within minutes in that case.  the 'jeep' kit is about 300 bucks online - only question is how much overhead room you have to anchor the pulley support etc..

I've got no room that I'm willing to sacrifice in the garage ceiling.  I stored it over the boat in the carport in the back yard.  I used some rope, a ladder, two 2x4s, and an ratchet strap to get it up and keep it there.  I had planned to concoct a lift using a come-along, but then I started thinking and headed down the more difficult path.

Gary or Blair, if you have some time in the next few days, could you stop by after work to take my bronco for a spin.  I've still got a stumble in drive when warm, no stumble in 2 or 1, only drive and in at all gears.  Also, wouldn't mind a second opinion on handling and overall roadworthiness.

Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: lonesouth on October 27, 2014, 09:40:46 AM
been driving mine every monday wednesday and friday in the morning.  I need to take it in to Mike, it shift up fine, but it doesn't down shift on deceleration until you start to move from a stop.  Also need to change the oil in the engine and rear axle.  I'm probably not going to bother fixing the rear main seal or rear pinion seal for now, i'll just deal with the oil on the floor.

Also, need to send tighten the sector shaft adjuster to tighten up the steering(at least to what it should be) and maybe send the box off to west texas offroad if that doesn't fix it.

My biggest complaint right now is that the steering wheel is not centered due to my lift.  Gary, I think you're running the same lift, 2.5" and inverted Y, how did you fix it?
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on October 27, 2014, 02:13:32 PM
I really didn't "fix" it. I put a new steering wheel on last year and just installed it straight. The box isn't centered but it still drives great so I'm not worried about it for now.

Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: lonesouth on December 08, 2014, 03:53:30 PM
kids were sleeping, wife was sleeping, some clerical nonsense had been taken care of, so I had a little time.

I have not changed the oil in a LONG time, so I started it warming up and did an oil change amongst other repairs.

First issue to address is my steering.  I've never been happy with it, always way too loose.  I rebuilt the box 2 years ago, but that didn't help.  I was about to remove it and send it off to west texas offroad, but I figured I'd check into tightening it up with the sector shaft adjusting nut on top.  I had set it when I rebuilt the box, but never verified I set it correctly.  I watched this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDLYLDBbWNw, made some adjustments, and man it is like a new box.

Second issue is that my steering wheel trim ring has always rubbed the steering column.  I had looked into this before, and was not able to find some mythical spring that should keep the shaft pushed away from the column.  I dug in some more and discovered that the snap ring which retains the bearing in the signal switch housing was not in the groove.  Easy fix.  Ground down the trim ring a little and now there is zero contact.  Which I had discovered this years ago.

I can't believe how much better it drives now.  Between the tighter steering and not rubbing, I think I removed some friction too which made the steering even easier.

I also bought myself some Christmas gifts.  Who's up for a wrench-a-que?  Need to install the new to me 4.11s and get the tires swapped to my new 15x7 SLOTS!
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: BroncoBlair on December 09, 2014, 07:25:46 AM
Glad you got a lot of things fixed. I am knee deep in trying to get mine rebuilt but I can try to help. Why do you want 4.11 gears. on trails it would be nice but driving daily may be too low.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: lonesouth on December 09, 2014, 08:28:11 AM
most of the gear threads I read on classic suggest that 3.50 are too high for 33's.  A lot of them recommend 4.56, but I know that is low for anything I am likely to do.  4.11's should be about the sweet spot and get me closer to the original drive ratio with stock tires.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on December 09, 2014, 08:51:25 AM
Glad to hear you got the steering sorted out. I'll be working on my steering in the next few weeks too.

3.50 gears with 33" tires are just about perfect for a mostly street driven Bronco. If you are planning to be off road more than on the 4.11 gears will be better. The only place the 4.11s will hurt you is on the highway.

I haven't seen anyone suggest 3.50s after trying 4.11s.  However, I will do the rear first and give it a shot to see how I like it.  I suspect for what I use it for, I'll prefer it, as I don't spend much time on the highway.  If I want MPG, I'll drive the minivan.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?
Post by: JustaFordGuy on December 09, 2014, 04:50:16 PM
It's not really an MPG thing (broncos aren't made for that) it's more of an RPM thing. I turn 2500+ at 70mph with 3.50s. With 4.11s you will be over 3000. I don't know about yours but mine is loud over 3000. :)

That being said, I'm sure you will like 4.11s just fine but I like 3.50s just fine too. Just not sure if it's worth all the work.
Title: Re: What have you done to/with your Bronco today?

I got my 1 ton steering kit installed. The install went smooth but I will need to fab a new steering stabilizer mount. The new links are 1.5" in diameter so the old mount won't fit around them.

I think I have my steering gear centered now but it was a little trickier than I expected. Hopefully I have it close enough. :D

I'll post some pictures soon.

i put 4:11 in my CJ5 with 35"x15:50 x15". with the 258 I-6 and T18 its about best for both on road (not hwy top speed is 45) and offroad. if I did it again id go 4:56. better crawl speed up in N Ga mountain trials.
that said I got 35" KM2's on the FJ and regardless of what all the forum dummys say it drives perfect on hwy and even better off. ratio is 3:73 and 4.0 v6 and 5 sp auto. its plenty punchy off the line. but its a modern fuel injected engine and not a good compare. Just saying changing gear ratios one size or so is not a game changer. But I think since you got them and a locker (right?) you will be happy with it around town and on the trail. One benefit you may have is better cooling by revving little higher when offroad slow trial riding. Also if your running the stock FORD pos alternator it will help keep volts up on those long trail rides.

I'm not real savvy with posting pics. But it was the Tan 1/2 cab in previous for sale posts from Theodore AL that included A PTO winch bumper and AC in a Box. That was Dec. 23 fast forward a little and I had to return with the Bronco to the Mobile area Tuesday to straighten out a Al. registration typo  I drove it there and when leaving the Tag office making a slow turn to the left the RR axle sheared at the drum and left the tire w/drum in the intersection. Thanks to Mobile PD and the seller I got towed to Majestic Auto Repair and left it for a Rental. and drove home with the hopes of getting it back Friday or Saturday this week. Parts didn't come in from Yukon so now I'm hoping for Tuesday or Wednesday to pick up and drive home. I will post more when I get it back

I recently removed my3 spd and D20 and took them to Dale at Performance Trans. It was jumping out of 1st and I figured a new bearings and seals was a good idea any way. well 1st was chewed up pretty good so I started looking for another, not to easy. someone on CB offered me his take off RAT, FREE .99. All I have to do is drive to Naples to get it. I am
patiently (Not) waiting  to get that one and make the best of the two.

Hey Harley, I'd be very surprised if no one here in town has one they would give you. I'll ask around.

just ordered a creeper for the garage.

1. EFI - get it running
2. gears front/rear, locker in the rear
3. steering linkages Y to adjustable T

I traded my fiberglass hood for a stock metal one

I fixed a broken brake line and rebuilt my starter.

I have created a deadline of the first of December to get this back on the road.

Hey Parker, Those wheels are going to look great, those are some of my favorites for a Bronco.

I'm back in town now and hopefully Blair or I can come by and get that air cleaner. ;)

got the wheels blasted(used calcium carbonate aka. chalk aka crushed limestone aka barn lime), then spent about 20 minutes each polishing with a power ball and some mcguires polish.  They aren't mirror finish, more something between mirror and matte.
