haven't talked to mike yet.  I've got the pan and valve body off, but I don't know what I'm looking at or where to go from there.

The main thing you need to look for is a damaged/loose manual select lever and broken band struts. If the select lever is loose or broken that can be fixed without pulling it. If the bands are broke it has to come out. If both of these things look good it will have to come out and be disassembled.

Was it still drivable? It would be good if mike could drive it before it comes out.

I could make a Thursday.

Turns out I can't go on Thursday. What other day works for everyone?

yea, it was still driveable.  regained reverse after sitting for two weeks while I sorted out the ignition.  right now it is sitting with the valve body removed.  I figure I'll start by cleaning out the VB, flushing all of the fluid from the lines/torque converter and see where that gets me.  anything to watch out for when disassembling the valve body?

Yeah, be super clean. The C4 VB is about the pickiest there is. Also there are a lot of small parts in there. I really don't think it was a VB problem. It's either a broke/loose manual select lever or a busted band. If those look OK you need to take it to Mike.

took a better look tonight.  can't see anything wrong with the shift lever or the bands.  Going to call Mike tomorrow and get his thoughts.

Mike said to pull it and bring it in.

Guess it will be a good time to add a trans cooler :)

Did he have any idea what could have broke?
Yep, you need one anyway. Get one with a fan.

couldn't say, just that only tearing it down will tell him what happened.
